Trim is used for drag on lower unit. For instance as you start out you want trim down so the lower unit (prop) is all the way in water so you get good start and water forces thru the prop. You then gradually trim up as you gain speed so that you can plane easier with less drag on the lower unit (although you don't trim up all the way). Trim also is used for entering and exiting the water so you don't mess up your expensive lower unit. It's also convenient for shallow areas and beaching your watercraft. I hope this helps as I could explain it better by showing rather than writing :-)

Ther are two types of trim. Trim tabs mount on the hull and are used to level the boat to compensate for uneven weight placement, to help the boat achieve plane faster. Trim on the motor is used to set the motor to get a better hole shot and to achive optimal steering control and to maintain the engine at the proper rpm range.

The trim tabs feature are to both level the boat fore and aft and athwartships(side to side) while on a plane(at speed),also used to help the boat achieve plane.

trim is one thing and tilt is another. most units these days are a combination. trim is for achieving optimum inclination when on plane. tilt is for raising the lower unit out of the water.
