Read "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. The entire society is "happy", but that is only because they do not know what sorrow is. They feel nothing when someone dies, they have no true love and heartbreak, etc.

Mediocrity is even worse than sorrow: it is emptiness. Happiness is more fulfilling.
