Usually it's where you're born or live now. Makes it easier to get to games :)

Many different reasons. Ones that a local team usually support that team. Others might support a team nearby or a team located in a place they have been or really like. Some might support a team because of its rich history or its fan base. Maybe because of the clubs success or the clubs players. Some might even support a team just because or just to make someone else mad.

I'm from Malaysia but I follow the EPL very closely from here. So I guess I have more "freedom" in choosing which team to support. And for me, it's Arsenal.
I chose Arsenal because I just love the way they play. I think they play one of the most beautiful football, and quite consistently so, in comparison to other teams from the League. I salute their clean passing, their attack and counter-attacking sequences are delightful to watch. And it's not just with their first eleven team players, the second team players are also playing the same game. Which other team would dare field a virtually under-21 team against the likes of Chelsea, with their star-studded cast?
Some people chose their team simply because of a player. I know some Man U fan who followed David Beckam all the way to Real Madrid!
It's really up to you actually. If you like football because of football itself, then you should choose a team that you think play well and enjoy watching them. If you're patriotic, then choose the team representing the place you live or were born in. If you like pin-ups, then go for star-studded teams such as Chelsea, Real Madrid or Manchester United.
Anyway, happy choosing and welcome to the world of football!

When the World Cup '98 took place, I was curious in all the hype and why so many people were interested in watching it.
At the time, there was so much hype about David Beckham, so I decided to watch England games. My first game was England vs Columbia. Then, when England played against Argentina and Michael Owen scored that wonder goal, I became a huge fan of him and began to support the team he played for (Liverpool).
Just keep in mind that I was a teenager at the time and I knew nothing better lol
Since Michael stayed at Liverpool for a long time, I gradually became a Reds supporter and I am damn proud of it!
So, if you are stuck, it's best to follow big competitions like World Cup and Euro 2008 and pick a footballer you admire :)

Most people will support their local team.
If you don't have your heart set on any, watch a few matches, look at the players. If you want to support a team, you must know something about football, so follow your feelings, if you really like a player, it's easier to watch his matches and get to like the team

For most it's your location, which ever sports team is near you is the one you support. However it depends on your family where they are from and who they supported. For some its whoever has the hottest players. I personally live in Arkansas and we don't have a pro team here. I enjoy following the Seahawks because I like Seattle. And my sister likes the Colts because of Payton Manning. We both have a hard time finding our teams sports stuff here. Good luck with whomever you choose.

I was fortunate that i didn´t really have a local team i could choose to support. We travelled so much there wasn´t one place i could really call home.
My old man came from the Manchester area, and although not a football fan, tried to palm me off with Man Utd. Nah! i thought, these colours are really naff but i quite liked West Hams Colours, so at a young age i decided to support them.
Haven´t looked back since, up and down a few times, but never back. Looks like i´ll be looking up next season though.

Your heart decides for you.
People usually/should go for their local team or the team their family has supported. Personally my Manc mother's side of the family has had Manchester United (or Newton Heath) drummed into them since my mothers (might've been great) grandfather worked for the Lancashire and Yorkshire railway in the 1870s. Plus all my Irish father's side and all in-laws are United till they die. I wouldn't be suprised if there's an unwritten rule that says we cannot marry outside of our club.
So yeah, my mind was pretty much made up for me. Not that I'd have it any other way. Of course, if you have no heart, no sense of tradition and like boring football, Chelsea is perfect for you.

Lived in Manchester all my life, most of my family were reds so I've loved manchester united for as long as I can remember.
I don't understand united "supporters" in indonesia and stuff that have never been to a game, while I dont mind london fans that are season ticket holders, as at least they are going to the games and giving support

You can support the football team you're family supports or you can support a football team by deciding what colour of gear they have(T-shirts, Socks, shoes and shorts).
