If I were you I would move to somewhere quite central until you get your bearings. This will also allow you better access to public transport which is not always so good in many suburbs and you would need a car.

Just outside of the CBD (but only 5-10 mins walk) is Darlinghurst. While living on Oxford Street can be quite noisy on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, if you are in one the off-streets you get the good location and a little bit better sleep! You can easily walk to the CBD and all the stores, you have all the bus connections from around Sydney and the suburbs and you can walk to either Town Hall or Central train stations. You are right by Hyde Park which you could walk through every day to get to and from the CBD.

You can also catch a bus 15 or so minutes to Bondi Beach (or the other nearby beaches) and so are also close to the Eastern Suburbs and shopping/eating area of Bondi Junction.

You would also be close to the Entertainment Quarter (previously Fox Studios where they still do some film production) which has restaurants and cinemas. Pop over the road and you find yourself in Centennial Parklands which is amazing and huge.

You could also move slightly north and on the other side of the Harbour Bridge to Neutral Bay which has lots of restaurants and pubs but isn't at all a noisy place.

After 6-12 months when you are more settled and know more about your direction and where you will be working you may want to move closer to where you work if it isn't the CBD.

Good luck.

It depends what you like and whether you want to rent or buy?
Eastern suburbs is nice but expensive to buy, close to beach and city and not too sleazy. Sutherland shire is nice, with good beaches and national parks cheaper than Eastern suburbs. don't go too far west, it's cheap but gets rotten heat and can be socially intolerable. Just enjoy where you get to live and it will be a great place.
