Past tense of can

Could to me indicates I choice you could do that or something else. And would indicates that is the correct course of action and should b followed.
This makes sense to me but its probably very confusion in black and white.

Could - means that something was an option to you in a past situation but not necessarily the option you would have chosen.
Would - means that you would have chosen one particular option in a past situation.

Could is possible.
Would is conditional, essentially it means could but with certain circumstances being in place. ie. I would go if I could afford it.
