we have a mexican girl 23 years old that has been working for us for the past year. she speaks no english at all. she works 11 hours a day and is the only mexican there along with my mom and cousin. i try to converse with her to keep her from being bored but conversation is somewhat difficult. i know some spanish because i took 3 years in high school. we had some decent conversations before and i try to talk to her everyday. she only speaks when i talk to her and never talks to me. if i dont speak to her the whole day she will not talk to me. she is not a shy person. when i stand next to her it feels awkard like she is uncomfortable when im close. should i just stop trying to speak to her.

Let her do her work.

Don't try to "make friends" -- you can't be friends; she's an employee (you have power over her; she has no choice in the relationship).

Leave the relationship professional. Pleasant, but professional.

No, it may be a cultural thing or maybe fear of saying the wrong thing. Imagine being the only one speaking your language. That must be hard. Are there any other spanish speaking people that you know? Maybe inviting them and then get to the bottom of things. It could be that to her work is work and not a place to talk, I'm not sure. Her work ethics might be such. Either way, I don't think you should stop talking to her. Maybe getting to her outside of work might help.

During working hours just speak to her when you need to. After working hours, speak all you like.
