Every state has different requirements. As for the individual who stated that EMT's do not start IV therapy, Not True. An EMT Intermediate can start an IV - in fact, it is a required part of your training.

I started as an EMT-I and then went to Paramedic school, and then continued on to my Critical Care training.

You need to check with your state's department of health to find out what is required for EMT training. Also, check with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. Personal advice - no matter where you go to school, go for EMT-Intermediate (EMT-Basics really are just "ambulance drivers") and take the National Registry test and maintain your NR certification - in being a NREMT, you can go pretty much anywhere in the US and legally work as an EMT.

Good luck and I hope this information helps!

You may want to talk with you Volunteer Fire Department to see if you can hang out with the Ambulance Team. This may help you decide if you really want to go into the EMT field.
