Rent a rug Dr. and a bottle of steam cleaner solution. Put some(1/4 cup) Dawn Dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle with water and pretreat all the heavily soiled areas first. You can even try isopropyl alcohol on tougher stains. Use steam cleaner solution and the hottest water and clean. You might have to do it twice. Do it one more time with 2 cups white vinegar and hot water. Lift up on the handle as you move backwards to get the best pickup possible. You will be surprised at what comes out of the carpet! The vinegar will remove any soap residue which actually attracts more dirt.

This would depend on several factors, such as: type of carpet, how dirty, dirt from what (gravel parking lot, grease or oil etc...), what is under the carpet (concrete, hard wood, underlayment etc..), how heavy of traffic, how much dry time do you have etc. Choose the best cleaner for your situation.
