I was there for 2 weeks last year and it is absolutely fantastic. The people are very friendly and welcoming and, unlike many uneducated and insular people around the world (including whoever made the post above about supporting the regime), are able to distinguish between ignorant politicians and normal human beings. There are so many wonderful places to visit and there is a lot of history to discover.

Persepolis is one of the true wonders of the world. Shiraz is lovely, with tombs dedicated to 14th century poets. Visit Yazd to learn more about the Zoroastrianism faith. There is the Assassins Castle at Alamut, wonderful museums in Tehran and fabulous mosques & palaces in Esfahan.

The food is excellent too.

If you're female, having to wear a headscarf at all times is a negative point but it's the law of the country and, like anywhere that you visit, you obey the laws if you want to visit. On the plus side, you don't have to worry about what your hair looks like!

If you have the chance to go, go...and don't believe everything you read in the newspapers or hear spouted from the lips of George Bush or Tony 'Bliar'.

its probabaly a beautiful country to visit, but why support a repressive/extremist regime with your money? there are better places to spend your money.

Strudders67: I hate to tell you, but I am neither insular nor undereducated -- I have lived overseas for over 8 years and probably have more college degrees under my belt than you do...

Yeah, its nice to support the common person -- in Iran or elsewhere, but who do you think gets all of your foreign currency when you visit a country under a repressive regime like Iran? Probably didnt think that far, did you?

Can't say I'd do it being a white female US citizen. There are places I'd rather visit anyway.
