If someone asked you how they looked and you thought they were ugly, would you tell them what you really thought? Would it be honest to tell them they look fine when you think they look bad? Yes honesty and truth are synonymous but our culture is laced with dishonesty. Much dishonesty is based on not wanting to hurt someone, to tell them what they want to hear. We don't go into elaborate detail with our young children about all the death and pain in the world because we want them to start life with the illusion of peace and serenity. Is this honest? No, but in this case to be honest would be wrong.
In a nutshell -- we can't handle the truth.

They are related, but not synonymous.
Honest is a trait of humans -- regarding the truthfulless of their comminications and behavior.
Truth has to do with what is -- whether statements about what is or isn't so match reality.
'Truthfull' would be a synonym of 'honest.'
'Truthfullness' would be a synonym of 'honesty'.

not necessarily
you can be honest about your knowledge or opinion on a matter and it can, nonetheless, be false.
In other words, an honest, truthful opinion does not dictate absolute truth about a given matter.
