Go to the bottom of the mouse. Take off the thing and open it up. Take out the ball. There will be 4 little metal smallt things inside the hole after you took out the ball. They are probably dirty and have gunk on them. Get a q tip, and scrape off al the gunk inside the thing. Then put everything back on. It should work faster now.

Sean, forgive me for being sharp with you but you did NOT even tell us what kind of a mouse you had.
Is it a roller ball mouse or an opticalmouse. If it is a roloer ball, then all you have to do is take off the ball cover (see the little arrows telling you which way to turn it) and then remove the ball, clean it carefully and NOW take TWIN TIPS or tooth picks or some small pick and clean the crud and fkluff and stuff out of the "gears" that move the mouse mechanism Up, down and sideways.
A mouse should be cleaned monthly a minimum. But almost everyonenow uses an OPTICAL MOUSE (Microsoft is best at about $10) and it has NO ball and will NEVER get dirty.
IF you can afford it please get an optical mouse and your troubles will be over!

Yes look on the bottom there should be a way of removing the ball by unscrewing its holder(you dont need any tools)There should be direction marks on it showing you which way to turn it ,when youve done that remove the ball and you should see two rollers ,these will be covered in dirt fluff, grease etc .remove it with something like a cocktail stick.reassemble and should be ok.If that doesnt work you must have been using it without a mat and damaged its underside.Treat yourself to a new one you can get one for less than a fiver.

If it is battery powered, change the batteries or clean the connectors. If it is optical, check the surface you are using it on - grab a mousepad - 3M makes an awesome Precise Mousing Surface. If it is a ball mouse, take out the ball and clean it. The bottom of your mouse could be dirty, too.
Good luck!

Take the ball out of the bottom and there are some tracker rollers inside try cleaning those. Dont put loads fluid in it though just see if theres any dirt that you can scrape off with your finger nails.

If it has a ball try to open it up remove the ball and clean the round bits that turn it, it has probably got dust trapped inside, this kept happening to our mouse, so we bought a light operated one with a light sensor, it is so much better.

If its a wireless one you may need to change the batterys. And also the little ball thing underneath it may need to be cleaned, they get dusty sometimes.
If all else fails, get a new mouse.
