There are at least 8 different types of intelligences:

Linguistic intelligence ("word smart"):
Logical-mathematical intelligence ("number/reasoning smart")
Spatial intelligence ("picture smart")
Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence ("body smart")
Musical intelligence ("music smart")
Interpersonal intelligence ("people smart")
Intrapersonal intelligence ("self smart")
Naturalist intelligence ("nature smart")

The ideal teacher tries to take this inconsideration when teaching new concepts. There are kinesthetic learners that learn best when doing movement. (best taught with movement or acting out) The Linguistic learners are the ones that do best at school because teachers generally teacher through words....Intrapersonal people learn best through peer activities, pick up social clues from others, cooperative learning groups.

These different intelligences/ learner were first identified by Gardner. (Harvard University) There are many books that give better instruction and understanding of the concept.
