i found a small rock in a forest in England its very sparkly and has a gold colour and is quite heavy for its size. any ideas what it is? or the name of any web sites what could help. many thanx..

on what you said
the gold mineral could be iron pyrite and the heavy (dense) feel would suggest a high iron content, but that is not the only mineral it could be. does it have a cubic shape (the gold bits) thats a characterising observation for iron pyrite. If it is silvery gold, that also indicate iron pyrite, a more yellow colour means you could have Chalco pyrite, the copper rich pyrite. this is not cubic in shape though. A metallic look will also give a strong indication of pyrite. what size is it, a large crystal/bulk of rock is less likely (in UK) to be pyrite.
is the rock itself gold or minerals within it?
if its a rock that is gold it may be high in mica taht has weathered, although this would be less dense. a flakey appearence would give it away as being mica.

It sounds to me like you've found a piece if iron pyrites; a.k.a. fool's gold. Check this out on the net or with any geology / mineralogy reference book.
