Literally, it's a dilemma on how higher life evolved from lower life. Some believe that the "egg" came first, meaning a mutation happened to the DNA of the egg, creating the new species. Others believe that the "chicken" came first. Either way, the main point is that nobody knows which came first. It's an expression when you don't know which came first.

It refers to the classic dilemma, which came first the chicken or the egg? An egg comes from a chicken, but a chicken comes from an egg but that had to come from a chicken... my head hurts.
