Who you know in ANY endeavor is a big help. Remember, the music business is just that, a BUSINESS. They aren't looking to make you famous and rich, they are looking to make themselves rich. If they believe you can help them, they will help you, by investing in you. Think of it like a bank. A Bbank doesn't loan you money because they like you. They loan it to you because you are a "good risk" (you'll pay them back), and they make money on you (interest and fees). A record company is the same way. If they think you are a good risk, (talent, marketable, no headaches, have a developed your own fan base successfully), they are more likely to invest in you. If you're one more hotshot guitar player with no fans, no gigs, no marketability, then who cares? They are in the business of selling records. Knowing who to go to for your style/type of music is key. You don't ask a Hip Hop producer to help you with your Rock band. If you know someone, of course it's easier. They will know others in the business, maybe the right person to help you. We trust whom we know.

I agree with what the first person said. If you want to get rich quick then yes, knowing the right people is very important.

If you're looking to be recognised because of your actual talent then you just need to put yourself out there. Perform as much as possible, If you do well at a good venue than perhaps you may get noticed by someone and there you go. I have friends who have been signed... they had been a band for 5 years before they got signed and i saw them on TV the other day.

So it really depends on what you consider success to be. I wouldn't recommend getting into the music buisness if you're only in it for the money though... those people tend to be one hit wonders.

Success in the music business depends on a variety of factors. Timing, who you know, whether you fit a popular image, the singing is secondary in today's music industry, Persistence is a key. Sing or play for whoever whenever you can because you never know who may be in the audience.

How would you define success? If you would define success by earning some quick dollars then yeah, who you know counts all the way.Although earning the respect of others and being remembered for very great lines like eminem, then talent counts a whole lot and motivation. For example bow wow knew people, made himself some quick dollars but he's no eminem.Eminem knew nobody kept working really hard and strived and is respected alot now. When you mention greatest rappers, how many people really bring up little bow wow?

quite, the industry in basic terms cares approximately profitability. it rather is quite no longer approximately admire or disrespect, it rather is with regard to the sheer form of followers and how plenty money they could make on a product. that's why steel would not quite get the juice. i've got faith somebody above stated skills would not inevitably equivalent acceptance. that's amazingly real, and it rather is why you would be able to experience disrespected, in spite of the indisputable fact that it rather is quite merely that it is not as rewarding as lighter stuff. Hand me a steel record which will bypass multi-platinum and that i will tutor you a steel album that all people knows approximately. i'm no longer a steel guy so forgive me if i'm passing out fake-steel in this occasion, yet seem on the black Metallica record. You as steel heads are no longer plenty in comparison to me as one in all those indie rocker. The music needless to say comes from distinctive places, however the music would not quite crack the mainstream radio, an extremely dependable and enthusiastic, yet nonetheless a area of interest fan base, handed over by way of the vast labels different than in very uncommon circumstances, yet nonetheless catered to by way of smaller to mid point clothing. it rather is merely that many times my music is merely too quirky and in specific circumstances abrasive and your music is merely too epic and in specific circumstances abrasive. i think of your conventional shopper would not opt for to experience challenged by way of their music. they only opt for to faucet their feet, bob their heads, and function some thing relatable to talk approximately around the water cooler.

absolutely,

how else would you explain the likes of Paris Hilton, Ashley Simpson or Brooke (Hogan's daughter?).

None of them are that talented if at all and certainly would not have made it on their own.
