Some cruises/resorts are all inclusive and you aren't supposed to tip. For example, I have heard Sandals resorts does this, it's supposedly included in the price you pay up front.
That is the only instance that it is okay to not tip. Otherwise you are completely right about tipping. I'm a massage therapist and I work for other people. It's really important for me to get tips because in my profession I can't work a 40 hour week without burning out my body or hurting myself. So I make a cut of what the spa charges and then the tip is helpful too. A lot of people don't tip out of ignorance (some don't know to tip at their first massage) and some just don't believe in it like your friend. If people realized that we don't make as much as you would think, maybe they would be more apt to tip.

Cruise ships in general include some gratuity in the rates that they charge for the trip. Bartenders, wait staff etc., it is generally accepted that tipping on all inclusive trips are up to you. The workers are paid a flat rate for their services. Just like anything else, tipping is a good thing if you want exceptional service.

OMG ! Your are describing my in laws. It is soo embarrassing to eat out with them. They get so irritated when my hubby and I go back to the table to leave a bigger tip. They think since they do not get tips for doing their job why tip hairdressers or wait staff. You are right. As for the cruise trust me if he is rude to the staff on the cruise he will pay in ways he will never know !! What goes around comes around. It is terrible how little the staff on cruises make and how hard they work. They deserve tips and respect.

You are right! I was on a cruise and the tip was incorporated into the bill + there was another envelope for our personal steward. They all worked very hard and I am sure they were paid minimum. Good question!

I think you should always tip (if you can afford it) if you receive good or excellent service; recommend the person to the supervisor, too. Some people who work jobs like that make minimum and less; the employer thinks that the tips make the difference; they have to live like anyone else.

you are wrong they do not take tips on cruises, these people are paid very well most of them actually live on the ships. You can tip if you like but they should not except it cause that is the policy------cruises are all inclusive.

Definitely! People are supposed to tip because of the extra services a waiter gives you. They don't HAVE to come by and ask if you need anything. They can take your drink, order and leave for the rest of the meal unless you chase after them.
