I have a house that was built in the 60's and it is brick. Overall the bricks and mortar look good, but there are places where the mortar needs patched or holes need filled in. How do I make mortar so I can patch those spots?

you could go for ready mixed sand and mortar, then you just need to add water, or you could go for a powder mortar and sand seperate. for a small diy job, you should get a small bag of ready mixed sand and cement. any hardware shop. mix it til it goes a nice thick consistency so it wont sag or droop when you put it in your holes.

i would buy one bag of cement and one bag of building sand and a good mix would be 3 :1 ratio you can do this by getting a old cup or jug and mix 1 cup of cement with 3 cups of sand and if you want to make a good soft mix try using a little bit washing-up liquid in the water , you can do this many times where ready mixed bags you generally have to mix in one go?
