The answer to this question varies depending on the attitude and desire of the student. I teach adult swim lessons and have seen everything from a high school student who wanted to learn competitive strokes to an 87-year-old woman in her first bathing suit ever!

The hardest thing for an adult to do is overcome their fear. Children usually acclimate easily to swimming because they don't know they are supposed to be afraid or cautious. Adults, on the other hand, have a grown fear from years of not knowing or being told to avoid the water. The biggest thing you can do is trust yourself and your instructor.

Find someone who is seasoned in teaching adults and listen to them. Take their advice. Get comfortable in the water. Spend some of your own time there. Go at your own pace and never let anyone push you beyond your comfort zone.

Realize that you will not be able to jump in and swim. It takes time. However, the timeframe is relative. I've seen men learn in two hour-long lessons how to doggie paddle. I've seen men take 8 weeks of classes to let go of the wall. It's about comfort and once you get started you'll be able to figure out your own timetable.

Good luck!!!

anyone who is confident enough, can swim. its just the people who are nervous about it and freak out in deep water who can't swim for example, if a non confident swimmer is in an area where they can swim, they are fine, but if they swim over to the deep end on accident, but don't notice, they are fine. as soon as they realize they are in the deep end the freak out. to learn all the strokes it takes only a few days though. to get good at them it takes forever.
