I've just discovered that a picture of me is being used on a dating site. It's one from my flickr page so I suspect someone just took it from there. I'm assuming this is illegal, but is it just a copyright thing, or does pretending to be me break the law in any other way?

Has anyone here had any experience with asking a site to delete photos?

I should add that I am based in the UK, but the site is an American one. Not sure if that makes any difference, legally.

Or do you mean that your partner has discovered you've put an advert on a dating website under a false name?

And you're now trying to cover your back?

Clever!

Go the the original site where you posted your picture and read their privacy agreement. I bet you that it says that you post at your own risk. When you place pictures on the net, it's fair game and I doubt that there is anything you can do about it legally. What you CAN do is contact the dating site where it was fraudulently placed and let them know that it's your picture and have them take it down. Words of wisdom.. if you don't want it traded, taken, or passed around, don't put it on the net.. On the net, almost anything goes unless it has to do with money...

you have already time-honored that it grew to become right into a extraordinarily stupid difficulty to do. as much as you sense you opt to maintain your acquaintances, possibly that is not for the superb.... Do you think of they're going to ever particularly appreciate you as quickly as they understand this? To be hassle-free it genuinely relies upon what variety of website you're speaking approximately. If that is in user-friendly terms some random communicate board, that is not suitable. If it particularly is a relationship website or something, i might advise deleting your account and in basic terms shifting on inclusive of your existence. Spend it sluggish inclusive of your boyfriend possibly?

lately this is a scam being run mostly from Niggeria. Men take photos from websites and post profiles on dating sites then use these profiles to initiate advance fee frauds. Contact the dating website and let them know

You can sue someone for using your name or likeness without permission if they use it to make money. You probably can't sue them if they just use it for a dating site. However, the dating site will most likely take the photo down if you ask them.

Well apart from pitying the ugly fool who took it, who indeed thinks your face will get him some action, all I would do is report him to the dating website webmaster, so that some poor girl doesn't get a shock when she turns up and doesn't find you.

If they were trying to perform identity theft and use your name and address, then I'd inform the police, maybe try and email the police in the town / city where the website is managed from.

The owner of the site has the means to remove your picture and identity theft is illegal in the U.S. You don't have to be a U.S. citizen to be protected by the law in the U.S.

First off, you probably need to talk to the two sites through e-mail or something. And about the law thingy, i dont know. but you really need to explain to the sites what happened and they can probably do something about it. And if your not an adult, you need to tell an adult you trust a.s.a.p

Good Luck!

No but get onto the dating agency straight away and tell them what has happened. They should remove it immediately and they will have details of the person who stole the photo.
