They do have a good record against top competition and they fared well in arguably the nation's strongest conference the ACC, but they've got some bad losses in and out of conference (NC State, Utah, Miami, Wake, Appalachian State). If they'd won a game or two in the ACC tourney they'd surely have been a protected seed (top four). As it is, I still think they're a solid 5, 6 at the worst, but they won't be getting a favorable pod site; nor should they.

Virginia will probably be a seven seed, depending on how much emphasis the committee gives to the recent losses against Wake Forest and N.C. State. The Cavaliers looked to be a strong four or five seed, but those two upsets hurt. This might have been the best story for Virginia's outlook currently: http://www.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/teams/report/VA/10052630

i think they will probably end up with a 6 seed with an outside chance at a 5...they play in the toughest conference and do have that excellent record against good teams as you point out, but they also got crushed by appalachian state(most likely not a tournament team) and utah(definitely not a tournament team)...those losses will probably keep them out of the 5 line
