The listed horsepowers were stated in what was called "SAE net horsepower." These ratings were on optimized dynamometer testing, not real-world rear-wheel horsepower. Nevertheless,it is widely believed that horsepower ratings of that era were understated to appease the US government and insurance companies. By far the most common factory-installed engine in '68 Charger production was the 318cid. Not surprisingly, the more collectible '68 Chargers are those with the 426cid, 440cid and the 383cid engines - in that order.
