I just need the general rule of thumb.

The temperature of the gas, when compressed decreases because:

PV=nRT
By the above formula, P and T are inverslely related
V=nRT/P

So when you increase pressure (compress gas) it will decrease the temperature because they are inversly related

Because the volume was decreased and the pressure was increased the molecules of the gas in the container will hit the sides faster and more frequently, like you mentioned the kinetic energy of the gas molecules is increasing because of exactly that. You have more motion thus more KE. I think maybe you are getting confused with the energy of the piston and the molecules as they are different. The equations refer to the energy of the contents/gas molecules, not the energy in the piston. Then there would be two energy variables. Because kinetic energy increases, temperature increases since temperature is a measure of Kinetic energy/speed of molecules. Hope this makes sense!

PV=nRT
P = pressure
V=volume
n, R = standard numbers
T= temperature
so if the pressure remains the same, the temperature decreases as the volume decreases. But possibly the temperature could increase if the pressure increases for the same volume!
Or the temperature could remain the same if the volume decreases and the pressure increases!

Increase. It will decrease when the pressure is rduced. This is the basis for modern day air conditioners. You can also experience it first-hand when you use 'canned air' to clean your keyboard. The can gets cold as the compressed gas expands as it leaves the can.
