The engine was not overheating and the smell was not there in the engine. Any ideas? The oil was very low - could it have been that?

hi i hope this helps you solve the burning smell in your car , i like you had my car about a year when i was going shopping with my daughter and we could smell this awful smell something like if you been in the country and you smell the farm yard smell yuk my daughter and i drove the car with the windows down it was that bad. i ended up phoning the dealers where i got it to have someone come and look at it because i thought the engine would blow and the receptionist told me that the same thing happen to her and believe it or not she said it was a Plastic carrier bag that had got stuck onto the exhaust and that's where the smell was coming from i could take the car back to the dealer and have the bag removed but it would cost me ,it,s only a matter of scraping the bag of or just let it burn itself away which it did so it could maybe be something simple like this so look under your car and under the bonnet to see if this is the problem good luck

Yes, lack of oil will give you a burning smell even though your temp gauge is registering OK. I take it this was on a short journey.
Your temp gauge relates to the water temperature.
Do you have an oil pressure gauge?
When you're driving the wind blows the smell and fumes through the bulkhead of your car into the passenger compartment. Not so noticeable when you stop.
I take it you've topped up your oil. Try it again and hope that no further damage has occurred.
But, please learn to check all water, oil levels on a regular basis !!!!!

Are you sure that the smell was generated in the car, or was it perhaps from a passing vehicle, or one that you were following. I've had that happen on several occasions. It seems that if it was due to an engine/oil problem, you would smell it under the hood.

6 months is a satellite link in itself. Good nose for engines.
There are several points that this happens and is common.
One is at 8000 miles when the first oil is struggling to recycle. The engine has pits by now even though miniscule.
This new smell is what is called block chalk, or oil burn. A
first oil change moves the designing composite around and
the engine struggles to keep up rpms, and efficiencies. A
perfect matchup is a glove box of koolaid snack drinks.

U better hope not as the garage will know if u ran the engine oil low damaging the engine, for a start the oil will go like treacle.

are u a low mileage driver as it may just be only the parts heating protective coating wax etc.

you could be burning because there is no oil in the engine definatly. check the water as well. i would say its the oil though. might be worth checking the exhaust could be fumes from there. or the air conditioning that can cause a burning smell even if its just burning a bit of dust.

If this is a car from Japan - or Europe - it came here on a ship (assuming you are in North America). When they ship these cars they spray them with a protective coating underneath to resist corrosion of the salt air. dealers are supposed to wash this stuff off at vehicle prep - they don't always do it. This stuff can cook off for months.
The low oil is a concern. make sure cylinder head covers are not leaking down on to exhaust pipes. that will do it too.

the first thing to check is you oil level if u r unsure how to do this then yuor manual should help, however if the oil is fine have a quick look under the car incase a plastic bag has attached itself to your exhaust. It is also possible that u have burnt out the clutch!the best thing for u to do if the first 2 things turn up nothing is take it to dealers itshould still be under warranty.

Is it a manual transmission? Are you a new driver?

If you answer yes to both questions, then the smell may come from the clutch and transmission liquid.
