Try Meetup.com They have a wonderful website that has different clubs that meet up at certain areas and times. I have gone to several meetings and have met wonderful people. For your safety, however, being that it is the internet, make sure that you are always meeting up at a public place at first.
Another thing to try, if you are politically inclined, is get involved with the local party that you are affiliated with (democrat or republican). I did that when I got out of the Corps and have a large circle of friends and activities to do all the time.
Another thing is volunteer. Whatever your intrest is there are plenty of areas that could use the help (ie, homeless shelters, animal shelters, goodwill or the salvation army, suicide hotlines, domestic abuse hotlines, so on).
Going to church is another way of meeting people and getting involved with your community.
One last thing, if you are really gutsy, invite the people in the houses or apartments around you to a small get together at your home. You will be amazed how many people live side by side for years and have no idea of who they are...!
Good luck on your move!
