I agree with al and bon. Building an acoustic is very time consuming and using cheap materials actually makes it more difficult.
For "less expensive" woods you can check http://lmii.com
I used to teach a guitar building class... the typical time, start to finish, was about 400 hours for a first guitar.

if you are going to spend time building an acoustic guitar, why would you be more concerned with the cost of the wood than anything else. Building a guitar requires excellent craftsmanship which would be a shame to not Honor by using the best materials to give the absolute best results.

If you're going to go through all the trouble of making a
guitar, why not use good wood? The difference in sound
will be so much better. As far as what wood to use, that is
easy enough to find out. What you need to do is go to
a guitar manufactures' site, and read what the body is made of.

I've always liked the sunburst myself. and the maple fretboard is kind of a Fender thing, at least it was last I checked, have an old Strat in surf green with a maple fret board that looks like crap because of the ware and the dirt that's been ground into it over the last 30 years but it still plays well so performance isn't an issue, but ebony or rosewood hides the abuse better.
