I said that to a friend and he disagreed. Now I'm wondering what you think of it.

My opinion is that you always have a choice no matter how desperate or hopeless the situation feels, in the most extreme that choice will be to fight for your life in any way possible or die. (With fight I don't necessarily mean physically fighting, there are other ways of resistance.) I think that giving up hope or keeping it is also a choice that you make.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Bruce, don't they have a choice about how to handle the situation. It's not the choice they want to make but it's still a choice isn't it?

I just want to say that I don't understand how people can give thumbs down when the answers is about personal opinions. There is no right or wrong when you state your opinion and it's a shame that people don't understand that.

Dragon, don't worry, I don't like rating answers that is all equally good, but I dislike the voting process even more. I'll just draw straws or let my pet pick if I find it hard to decide. :)

I believe that we ALWAYS have a choice about what is accomplished in our lives. I do not think destiny or fate exists, only free will and truth. However, other's do have a huge impact on your life as well. Say you're driving down the street, it is your choice not to hit another car and possibly kill that person as well as yourself. But it is also that persons choice not to do the same to you. Basically, you're life is in the hands of everyone around you, and visa versa.

Behind every good and bad action, a final choice was always made. Even for a murderer, there was always a moment where they could have paused, thought about what they were about to do, and stoped themselves. Most people just rush right through, not thinking about their actions or the consequences. Many lives could have saved if people made difference choices (but then again many people could have been killed if a different choice had been made in a different situation, so I guess it all works out in the end)

People who have committed a horriable crime may say that they were under the influence of drugs or alchohol, and really didn't have a choice, but at one time or another they did. There was a moment when they could have stopped themselves from having that one last drink, or could have decided not to get high.

The bottom line is that during every second of every day of your life, you make choices wheather or not to do something, and those choices, no matter how small or insignificant, are what shape your future.

Some choices I made.
- Stay with abusive husband or do something scary - be single Mum - I loved it.
Go on being single Mum or try going to University at same time - hard work but I adored it.
I did die in 2001, due hospital negligence - commit suicide or try to understand world - that was a very, very close one but I got to live and see my new grand-daughter -fantastic.
30 yrs ago I had the worst pain ever, child-birth was a 2 score as compared with this pain. I didn't know it, at the time, but I could have very easily died; but there was no-one to look after my children, so some-how I endured the most terrible week of my life. No it did NOT result in anything enjoyable(I had to suffer hospital etc..) BUT now I DO understand suffering, from a personal view and it made me a better teacher; also my children knew and are so kind to me now.
There is ALWAYS a CHOICE.
Oddly often the un-pleasant way comes out not so bad and iften, like University can actually be great.
Look up Robert Frost poem that begins -
"Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;"
The poet continues about which choice he made

This should prove it to your friend

well I totally agree. Life is full of choices from the time you are born. The choice u make decides where u are heading. Yeah the choices we makes show what we hope for and what we believe. No matter how tough the situation there is always a way out! It all depends on our choice as to have we take it.

Yes yes yes I agree with you. WHATEVER the circumstance, we have the choice of our "attitude" about it. We can choose fear, anger, revenge, whatever, & be as miserable as we wish. For example, we may not have a "choice" about someone mugging us, having a truck run into us, or being held hostage. The way we respond is always our choice. Plus, sometimes our choice averts compounding a potentially dangerous situation. An example is, a very tough looking woman cut me out in a shopping mall; her face was purple, & if it came to anything, she'd have made mincemeat out of me. I rolled down my passenger window & smiled, & said: "I'm so sorry!" Her face was blank as a plate. Even though she was wrong, wasn't it my choice to avoid a disaster? She was so puzzled, she just drove away. & me? I laughed. CHOICE OF ATTITUDE. Also, if one gives up "hope" there's far less chance of recovery in anything. I think "Love is" gave you a wonderful answer. I hope YOU make the "choice" (no pun intended) & not leave this to the voters.

Yes, I totally agree with you.
We always have a choice. Even in the face of death or something we cannot change in the outside.
We as a person, can change always internally.
For example, we have the choice to face suffering with composure or nobility or we can let us go and become bitter.
To be human means that we always can choose how we stand towards a situation, even if it seems hopeless.
In this book of Victor Frankl "Mans search for Meaning", he describes how people did choose to behave in the face of extreme suffering in the concentration camps. Some did choose to give up and behave like animals and others did choose to keep their human diginity in the worst possible of circumstances.
God bless you.

Hopelessness does not exist outside of the mind that sees the situation as hopeless.

Absolutely agree.

If a man is standing in front of you with a dog to a puppy's head or your paren't head or your OWN head, telling you to do something or he pulls the trigger... you still have the choice to say no.

You are so right. At 63 I have a motto fight what you can fight, accept what you have to and live everyday like it may be your last.

If one is standing on the gallows with a noose around their neck, I realy don't believe that they have much of a choice in the matter!
