I would like to live in a more liberal society, where such choices are up to the individual not the state. My personal take on this is that I would be OK with giving someone medication that shortened or ended their life when the person was clearly choosing that for themselves and had a sure and personally understood awareness of consequences of what they were asking for.

What is "active" euthanasia - is it a variant?

The doctor needs to do more than keep people physically alive - but care for whole person.
