Couple of thoughts, mostly from my own mistakes in the past.

1. Did you really get rid of the old OS or is it still there? Having two OS on the machine on different partitons (or the same one) is going to kill perf. - I did this once and it was only evident when I a) rebooted and had the option to pick Windows 2000 or Win XP or b) when I explored the Hard Drive and found the other partition

2. Do what the others said - Ctrl-Alt-Del and look at a) performance - is the CPU running constantly, is the RAM really low, etc. or b) is there a process that is chewing up CPU and RAM? - track these to the source and kill the source

3. Registry issues - frequently people have registry issues that can be cleaned up using a utility program. This is especiallu true ifd you launch a lot of programs, videos, music, etc. directly off of the Net. Try cleaning this out.

4. HW - it is also possible that the PC just has slower "stuff" than you are used to - RAM is not all created equal, nor are harddrives, CPU's, video cards, etc. - if the internal pieces are lower quality than you expected - the PC may be a dog, especially on a new OS that tends to eat more resources.

Good luck.

Well, it sounds like you probarbly have a issue with RAM or CPU speed. I need some more information: The version of windows you were using, the version you are using now, the amount of ram you have, and the cpu speed. If you dont know how to find those last 2 out, right click My Computer and hit Properties. It will tell you there.

http://www.ccleaner.com
Run Ccleaner, use the Issues tool then the Cleaner.
You could do with at least 512 mb RAM, Windows XP uses 256 mb by itself!
Run Winpatrol and use it to stop all your programs loading on startup as they are all using memory; leave Windows and your security software

- Defragment your hard drive from Start - programs - accessories - system tools - disc defragmenter. Leave the machine while it runs.

It is possible that it may need some more RAM. or try a defrag see if that speeds it up or even
check your task manager and makesure nothing is running in the background using a lot of cpu or memory

how old is the machine. how much ram is there, what is the processor. Answer this and ask yourself 2 questions. Is the machine up to the job of running xp. Also, he may be a friend, but you were a willing buyer who would give him money for an old machine.

check and make sure you dont have a lot of software running when you start up.go to start and click run, then type msconfig and hit ok,then on system configuration click on the startup tab,its the second to last ,then uncheck the programs you dont want to run and hit apply.i find if there is nothing running on startup it runs faster.if thats not it buy some ram.

download a free copy of adaware se and run entire system scan, you may find more than u think, get rid of all bad or corrupt files, it doesn't hurt to run this scan daily. other than that you can go to add/remove programs and get rid of anything u dont use, then add ram. on my second computer it was originally 256 i added 512 to that now its a powerhouse! good luck!!
