A lot of people are seriously lacking intelligence. I guess their dog's appearance is more important to them than the dog's happiness and health. Same thing goes for the cropping of ears.

Although there are some people who believe that it's okay to cut any tail off any pet for any reason, there are an 'equal number' of people who believe it's totally 'not okay' to cut the tail off of a pet.
There are a few 'breeds' of dogs that traditionally get both their tails and ears 'docked', and some that get only their 'tails' docked. These are breeds of dogs where the 'tail' is actually 'weaker' and prone to 'breakage' if it is 'left on' the animal. In the same way, the 'ears' on some dogs 'flop' so that the dog can't 'hear as well' and have a tendency to 'develop bad infections' in their ears.
Presuming that you are 'looking to buy an animal' and don't want one that needs to have it's tail and/or ears docked, and are 'wondering why people do such cruel things' to an anmial they say they 'love' ... and I 'generally agree' with you, but if I had a 'loved pet' and it's tail kept breaking and had to be put into a 'cast' or it had 'constant ear infections' or even had a 'leg' that just couldn't work any more, I'd have it 'operated on' so it could be 'healthy' ... and I've known a dog with four legs who had to have one leg amputated after it fell out of a pickup truck ... and he was a 'really nice' dog both 'before' and 'after' his 'little operation.'

For dogs, the American Kennel Club used to require it in some breeds for show. They have mostly abandoned those rules, but some people still think it makes their dogs more valuable, or it looks cool.

I don't get that or ear cropping. Just leave them the way there were intended. JMHO. I have no idea why anyone would cause unnecessary pain for the sake of cosmetic appearance.

its cosmetics and usually done to fighting dogs like rotts & pits etc....some do it because the breed standards are to do it for showing that dog....but I think its just plain wrong in my book let them be the way they were created!!!some states are trying to otlaw ear cropping and tail docking and calling "cosmetic surgery" and unnecesary...

The only reason I can think of is if you're going to keep them in the house and you don't want things knocked off or broken.
