I always wondered that too until I spent some time around a Great Dane who didn't have his ears cropped or his tail docked. He broke his tail several times in his lifetime and more than once he left a guy doubled over on the ground because that tail was just at the right height. He was also prone to ear infections and ear mites. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, just that there are reasons why people have it done.

some folks do it for the looks, but sometimes, in rare cases, the dog needs to have its tail cut off, like if it's tail got ran over and it was too much pain for the dog, dont laugh, sometimes the vets choose that instead of putting the dog down.

Its cosmetics and usually done to fighting dogs like rotts & pits etc....some do it because the breed standards are to do it for showing that dog....but I think its just plain wrong in my book let them be the way they were created!!!some states are trying to otlaw ear cropping and tail docking and calling "cosmetic surgery" and unnecesary...

Well when we got our dog her tail had been cut about 3 inches and it is still long. I think it is like beaver teeth. It can't get too long.
