I prefer getting to know that person first because then I'm more relaxed in his presence. I can become comfortable and see whether he and I are actually compatible. Also, building up a friendship first gives you a certain trust that a boyfriend may not otherwise have.When you go out first you're acting entirely off attraction and who knows, he may be the finest man out there but you have nothing to talk about.

I have always preferred getting to know someone before getting involved at all. The reason for this is a matter of safety. You can't change history once you have been treated poorly by someone. So it is your responsibility to understand them before being alone with them for any length of time..Safety, safety, safety....this world is filled with sicko psychos...

Best bet is to get to know someone prior to going out. I have been married for 11 years now and we were friends prior to going out - somewhat. It is always better to know someone prior so you don't waste precious time eventually finding that you are not compatible.

I think just going out with them works better. People take on a lot of "fakeness" on the phone.

BOTH! :) getting to know the person works out b/c you can think of topics to talk about.,.. but its also fun to go out with someone you barely know or know thru friends. then you have that "new & exciting" feeling.
i don't really go out with anyone that i dont know at all, or that my close friends dont know... there's a lot of psychos out there!
