had to reinstall windows 98 before it took my b/band disc now when i put it in it comes up illeagal operation this computer will shut down...can anyone please help

Get to the DOS screen. having windows 98 this should be function on your start menu. Or in your control panel. When in DOS type FORMAT C: follow the onscreen prompts. Give it some time as it is clearing your HDD. When that is complete switch off and reboot with the disc inside and follow the setup. Your computer should be clean and ready in no time.

Try formatting your hard drive (after backing up your impotant data) and then re-installing Windows.
If this still doesn't work your hard drive may be on it's way out. It's difficult to say without looking at the machine.

you may have a virus format your hard drive and reinstall windows. Sorry but do not save anything off your hard drive if you do have a virus you will transfer it to you formated hard drive

The best way to put away all your problems is to reformat our PC and try downloading AVC active virus shield, its a very good anti virus.

windows 98 is old, get newer version of windows (Windows XP), or you can try to install Linux, which you can get for free
