We have had perennials from both and had no problems. Those sent by mail may tend to be a bit smaller and need help to grow on for a while. If you go to a Nursery then you will be able to see and select exactly what you want which is a great advantage. Postal plants tend to be slightly cheaper but no selection of which plant you will end up with.

I would say a nursery where you can see the items and make sure they are in good condition.I have bought plants by mail with varying results. Some have been quite good but others pretty poor. It's like in a supermarket picking out your own fruit or veg. rather than buying prepacks. The exception of course is if the species of plant was not readily available at your local nursery and you had to deal with a specialist plant breeder a long distance away.

Hi Charles -

Great question. I prefer to buy plants via mail order simply because the wide selection of plants and the varieties which you cannot find anywhere else. I live in Los Angeles and have a good amount of nurseries available to me - and which I shop at - but, if I want something unique and of outstanding quality - then, I will go mail oder from a REPUTABLE nursery house.

Not all mail order houses are equal -- for instance, I would NEVER purchase plants from Gurneys http://www.gurneys.com or Van Bourgondien http://www.dutchbulbs.com --

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that I am HUGE fans of Willow Creek Garden http://willowcreekgardens.com and Brent and Beckys Bulbs http://www.brentandbeckysbulbs.com or Plant Delights http://http://www.plantdelights.com for online/mailorder houses. Moreover, these two (and many other) offer substantial year-end or special savings particularly when you subscribe to their mailing lists.

my Grandma has bought quite a few plants & bulbs via mail-order over the years from a company called "Bakker", and had good results with them. Their website is: http://www.bakker.co.uk/

SUTTONS (best known for their seeds) also do mail-order plants, and here's the direct link to perennials on their site:

Don't know how good they are, but if they've been awarded the Royal Crest (and they've been carrying it for as long as I can remember) they must be doing something right.

Try buying some of the garden magazines and you will find loads of adverts in the back, because what is a good one for me may not be the right one for you.
Spalding in Lincs is a good area to buy plants from.

The following seems to have a good site
