I changed my thoughts on this. Now I think Character is an illusion in American Politics. There's too many spin doctors, poll takers and image consultants to place stock in book covers. I think its more important to watch what a person does. What about you?

Neither. It's how many special interest groups you can keep happy to keep you in office.

Is it "we do what we are", or is it "we are what we do"? I believe it is the former, that is that policy is a reflection of character.

As for the rest of your comment, I think you confusing "character" with "image". A person HAS "character" (good, bad, or otherwise), "image" is CREATED either by the person or others. There's no guarantee that a person's image will match his character.

The problem is that few people truly know another's character, but many can observe his/her policy. Therefore, the most accurate way to evaluate a person is by what the person does.

I guess that was a long way to get to the answer, POLICY is best in the context of politics.

Well, if this person has no character, how can this person be expected to actually follow through with any good policies? Consider our current president and his cronies.
I think character is extremely important. No matter the spin, there are ways to find out about a persons reputation.

Policy affects millions. Character affects the people around you. Certainly you could argue that the President's character affects his policy, but then that' s why we have three branches of government for "checks-&-balances". Both are important, but policy wins hands down.

Elections in the US are controlled by the media and the media wants character because policy is boring.

When you have watched what they have done, you are thus forming an opinion on the character of that person. So I will have to stick with character.

Policy.

I just hope for a leader who is going to keep the place I live safe and can balance a budget without stripping me of my savings. If he/she turns out to be a saint, than that would be the icing on the cake.

Character. If you don't have character, your policies will suck.

Look at bush for a perfect example of that.

Character, look at Bill Clinton if you want to see the anti-character example. Enough said.
