i have a problem with my ethernet cables?

One of my desktops has two ethernet cards. one i use to connect to the dsl modem and the other to connect the laptop to the desktop.everything is good and connected but the laptop gives a message saying limited or no connection. but the desktop is doing just fine. I did the whole set up my network thing and I'm sure i did it right because I've been doing it before.

Why won't it work?

I'd suggest that you get a wireless router. One reason is that if you get one, you'll be able to use a wireless card for your laptop and other computers that you have. Also, you could still run an ethernet cable from the router to the laptop and you could network them that way.
