i have a desktop with a 56k modem n USB port n some COM ports(no ethernet).n a laptop with USB ,ethernet n a modem port.is there anyway to connect these two using the available ports i have.... directly....without conncting to the internet....

You can network over USB with a product such as http://www.meritline.com/usb-2-network-cable-usb-to-usb.html

If you just want to transfer files once or twice, I recommend getting a USB thumb drive and just manually moving them.

Otherwise you can look at software like pcAnywhere.
