Fish and many other animals lack the mechanism in their brain that says "I'm full" so that they'd stop eating. It can be argued many humans also lack this mechanism.
The rule of thumb is as much as they can eat in 3-5 minutes, twice daily.

No that's what healthy fish do. Don't keep feeding them again and again or they won't be healthy anymore. It's hard to starve a fish they are cold blooded and really don't require a lot of food. You are just dirtying up their water, with watse and uneaten food. They do not know they are full, they have no nerves to tell them that so they will eat themselves to death if you let them. Feed them 2 times a day all they will eat in about 3 to 5 minutes. They can live more than a month with nothing to eat at all, so if you skip a meal or two its ok.

Fish have a way of coming to the glass when you walk by - wiggling their little bodies and looking at you with those big eyes - and just looking like they are starving!
DON'T BUY IT!!!
This is like the little puppy you fed 30 minutes ago coming up to the dinner table and giving you the sad eyed look and whining. It looks SOOoooo hungry, but you know it just ate. It's begging, and overfeeding them isn't healthy. Only give them what they can eat in about 2 minutes, twice a day at most. If there's food that's not eaten after the time's up, take it out with a net. And it doesn't hurt them (is in fact good for them) to skip feeding totally one day a week.
I keep one fish species (a mouth brooder) that doesn't eat AT ALL for the ~21-23 day egg incubation period. I don't think your fish are starving.

You have conditioned your fish to behave that way. Stop it! You are killing them. If you think I'm wrong, try this, stop feeding them altogether. They won't die, they won't get sick and they will enjoy the improvement in the quality of the water, because there won't be any crap or rotting food. People that sell fish food will tell you to feed them up to 4 times a day, that's because they sell fish food. Fish in the wild have all the clean water they need, but must spend every day looking for food.Water with a lot of food is not clean. Your fish need for you to spend your energy on clean water, not feeding. One feeding per day is plenty, skipping a day makes cleaner water, skipping a week end won't hurt the fish. When we go on vacation my fish go for ten days without food and I haven't lost a single fish to starvation. If you really care about your fish concentrate on clean water. Remember, anything that you put in your tank never goes away until you remove it. A filter is just a box to hold the crap until you remove it. As long as something is in the filter the fish can smell it and taste it,it doesn't go away until you clean the filter.

Avoid over feeding like the plague. Healthy fish are hungry fish and the quickest way to make them sick is to overfeed. You can feed them several times each day if you wish but only what they can consume in a couple of minutes. If the food is uneaten after 3 or 4 minutes feed less each time. It is in a fishes nature to continually search for food - after all it is it's prime activity in nature. Also it helps to feed more than one type of food. Dry if they will eat it and frozen foods too.

You should only feed your fish 2 to 3 times a day, but only as much as they can consume in 2 mins. Overfeeding your fish will kill them.

Fish are opportunistic feeders, and will continue to eat as long as you feed them. That's why it is suggested that you only feed them twice a day and no more than they can eat in three minutes.
It is also a good idea to not feed them at least 1 day a week to allow their digestive tract to clear out.

Yeah, every fish seems to be like that now and then. My opinion is if you do not know how much food FOR SURE you should feed em, see your local pet store. Make sure they have some stuff to do.

Fishes are forever hungry. Fishes do not know when they are full. That's why you don't see fat fish but fishes died of over feeding. For gold fish, their stomach is as big as their eye.

No! Fish always want more. Once we went away for Spring Break and we had the neighbor feed it. They fed it so much it died.
