I've lived in both Houston and Austin. Austin for 12 years and Houston for 49. Austin is smaller with the hills but you still have the traffic and not near the stores or businesses as you have in Houston. Houston has more entertainment and better hospitals and doctors. The housing in Houston is more affordable and plentiful. The cost of living in Houston is a little less. While in Austin I lived in the Granada Hills subdivision and you could either enjoy deer or hate deer in your yard. The deer ate all of your planted flowers. In Houston most every yard is covered with beautiful blooms. The hills are beautiful but be prepared to continually put brakes on your automobile and return your shopping cart to an area that will keep it from rolling into cars. Now that I have put it all down, I prefer Houston.

It is easier to define Austin than it is Houston. Upbeat applies to Austin, not Houston. High Tech, Austin; not Houston. Music, Austin; not Houston. Higher Education, Austin; not Houston. Better weather, Austin; not Houston. More available lakes and good parks, Austin; not Houston. "Hanging Ten" on the wave of the future, Austin; not Houston. Many varied lifestyles, Houston; with Austin being more homogeneous. Austin has more of a prevailing "mood" that if one does not buy into, it may be more comfortable to not face it everyday. Austin feels new, Houston feels old. Employment and Security, Austin is as good or better than Houston. I apologize to Houston's Rice University, one of the best; to its Art Museums, to its Memorial Park, to its Professional Teams in Baseball, Basketball and Football, none of which Austin has. But Austin is "put together" and Houston is splintered into endless neighborhoods each with separate identities. My pick:
Austin, head and shoulders above.

Austin. College towns have the cultural advantages of a big city while being smaller, slower paced and less congested.

I much prefer Austin. Its smaller, not as humid, prettier countryside, and great nightlife/music. Overall its more liberal and with the university there is a better intellectual life.
