DO THEY??? I've seen pigs and cows doing that, but never a horse. I guess the earth retains some heat from the fire which may make it a snuggly place to sleep. It may make a good dust bath too! My horses don't go in the field where we have a bonfire because there are always dangerous bits of rubbish left, that don't burn, like nails etc. I wouldn't want them to get injured, and I don't fancy having to brush the soot off them either!...

It might be the gritty texture, they'll also roll in a patch of sand if there is one. At this time of year they're getting ready to shed their winter coats and its probably itchy. Give them a good groom. Check them for skin parasites as well, ash is acidic and some animals and birds use it to get rid of parasites.

Keeps their skin dry and therefore helps keep parasites off.
