Just wait... they're selling them to 6 year olds now in Europe.
The phones can only dial 4 numbers... usually the parents, grandparents, one neighbour, and maybe the police.
My son got one when he was 12, because now he has to take the bus to a distant school. Possibly missing the bus to come home... he can call us. That was the BIG REASON.

Who says you are supposed to get a cell phone?
It is with the stupidity of parents to give a child under the age of 15 a phone for any use other than to call 911 or home. Unless the child pays for it him/her self in full.

not just in Europe. the Firefly is a cell phone for kids just as was described. preprogrammed by the parent with 4 numbers and it has a cord to hang around the kid's neck. I think if it's used responsibly, it can be a big help keeping track of a child.

When i got a cellphone, I was 14 years old. But now iam seeing more people who are 10 years old and younger that are getting cellphones. I think that if you get a cellphone, you should be mature enough not to spend all the money in one day, if you know what i mean! But IF i had a child, i would only give a cellphone if he or she was 12 years.

When you start earning and could support yourself. That would be the best time to have a cell phone. That will be the time, you would know the pain to pay the phone bill.

Never!
I don't like cell phones for various reasons.
Primarily, not enough research has been done to say that having a microwave radio glowed to ones ear is a safe practice, especially for children.

My daughter, a grade school teacher, let her son get his cell phone when he was 10, but with VERY limited use. Also, he has to keep up his responsibilities such as grades, room, etc. or he looses it for a given period of time. It has worked tremendously as a motivator because of the peer pressure of wanting one. It also easier for her to keep in touch with him.
