I was wondering if anyone could provide suggestions on different types of tape recorders that I could use to tape college lectures. Which ones do you think would be the "best"? Thank you.

Some notable and cost-effective voice recorders:

Olympus VN-2100PC Digital Voice Recorder (36 hours transferable to PC, $35+)
Panasonic RQ-2102 Recorder (length of inserted casette tape, $20+)
Sony ICB300 Digital Voice Recorder (37 hours, $35+)
Sony TCM150 Recorder (25 hours, $20+)

If you can afford the extra $15, get the digital voice recorders. You can access a particular part of an audio clip without having to listen to fast forward through everything else (random access versus sequential access). I'd choose the Olympus VN-2100PC Digital Voice Recorder.

Also, some professors ban recorders at their classes, just something to keep in mind.
