I started on 500mg and my stomach was messed up the next day. I was upped to 1000 the next week and after a week or so on that my stomach calmed down a lot!

Try to avoid a lot of sugars and bad carbs those seem to upset my stomach the most! And make sure you take your pills with food- it really helps!

I take 2000 mg a day, divided into four doses. when I started the metformin, I was taking 500 mg once a day, and didn't really notice the side effects. I think they started when I was taking 1000 or 1500 mg, and persisted for a few months. After about three or four months, the worst of the side effects subsided quite a bit, and while I still have diarrhea more frequently than when I wasn't on metformin, the worst of it seems to be past.

In the UK, Metformin tablets are prescribed to diabetics, to help control blood sugar levels. One of the common side-effects is stomach trouble, such as diarrhea or constipation, cramps, nausea, etc. With some people, this lasts 3 to 7 days. With others, it's an on-going thing
