Yes that's normal behavior. If you starting seeing your hd light flashing constantly even in a resting state then you have to look at doing some error scanning and defragmenting.

If your HD is working when your PC is idle then you have some malicious program running in the background, and if you have one then you probily have many. Boot into safemode and use a spyware removal tool and anti-virus to clean up your system. Do it several times because you often find more programs on the 2nd or 3rd pass.

A cheap way to test to malicious software is to close every program running then hit ALT+CRTL+DEL and click the performance tab. You you'll see two graphs. Ignore the bottem graph. Let your computer idle for about 60 seconds (don't even move the mouse) and look for large spikes in the graph. If your getting spikes then your either have something that needs to be removed, or the computer is doing automated updates/scans.

No. The hard drive should be working none or very little at idle. The most likely cause is Malware.
The best solution is to get rid of Windows and install Ubuntu instead for free at www.ubuntu.org

It could be many things. One thing that stands out more than any other is that you might have a trojan horse. Some hacker could have turned your computer into a "zombie." That means that he/she is using your computer to attack other computers on the WWW. Your virus scanner might not even be programmed to detect it. You could check for "root kits" and trojans with a lot of different software. The best I can recommend is A-SQUEARED FREE. You can get it at:
