The San Andreas Fault is the cause of all the earthquakes in California. Tectonic plates are chunks of the earth's crust. California lies on a transform fault., where two of these plates are sliding past each other. Because of this, friction forms between the two plates. This causes a stress to be stored in the rocks (in the form of potential energy). When this stress exceeds a certain point, the release of this the stress causes earthquakes.
