I sincerely doubt the right wingers would have even noticed the area. They had no interest in Kosavo and Bosnia over the ethnic cleansing, or even any interest in Rwanda.

If I recall, it is the elder Bush who dislikes broccoli.
Get over the oil thing. This is not about Iraqi oil, which goes to Europe, not the US, though we have distinct interests in Saudi oil. We'd be there anyway because of geography. If a stable government can be had in Iraq, it will support efforts in Afghanistan, put a moderating force between Iran and Syria, be non-threatening to Saudi Arabia, possibly decrease the pressure for an independent Kurdistan thereby helping Turkey, and down the road possibly even be an example for democratizing other countries (Shhh! many are our allies) in the region. It's a big idea, and people who think they're being urbane linking the war to oil are really just being petty in their thinking. You sell both the political and the corporate leadership short.

If the oil companies have such a big influence on US government as you claim, then in 1991 in operation desert storm the US would have marched in, taken over Iraq so they can control their oil fields.
If it was about oil you do not allow citizens to vote on a constitution, when in the constitution they could easily include a clause that oil fields cannot be owned by foreign companies.
If it was about oil, you do not try to install a democratic government, but instead you install a puppet dictatorship.
If it is about oil, where is the proof. Analysts attribute the high profits of oil companies to high prices of oil, attributable to an increase in demand from China. If you disagree with my statement then provide proof that the analysts are wrong.

Of course! You don't seem to understand that we did not "invade" Iraq, we resumed hostilities. After Saddam's army was pushed out of Kuwait by us, their was no formal surrender. There was only a conditional cease fire. The problem was that Saddam overplayed his hand.
If he only fully cooperated with the UN inspectors which was one of the conditions of the cease fire and did not shoot at our aircraft over the "no-fly zone" another condition of the cease fire, he would still be in charge of Iraq today. But either he did have WMD's or he liked convincing the world that he did.
After the 9/11 attack, with Osama Bin Ladin in Afghanistan we could not take the chance that Saddam might transfer the WMD's or the technology to produce them to the terrorists. We had to resume hostilities and remove Saddam and destroy the WMD he had convinced the world were still there.
Whether or not there was oil there was also a factor but that in itself was not factor enough to resume hostilities.
It is a factor now. Imagine if we pull out of Iraq too soon, the government falls to Islamic fundamentalist radicals. They would have a new base of operations to threaten the entire region and oil revenue to fund it. The people of Iraq would live under harsh Sharia Law.
Broccoli, indeed.

Not unless there was a need for broccoli in the world and by invading Iraq it would raise the price of the vegitable. Making huge profits for the large broccoli company's, if that was the case and we had a president that was invested in it, we would invade them.

To get all that delicious broccoli, of course. Not for oil, though, if that is what you are misthinking.
