If it was only one eye, then you would have hurt your eye while sleeping. If it was in both eyes, then you would have exposed yourself to some allergens. Buy some eye wash lotion and wash it. Sometimes, while sleeping, we even open our eyes and turn. It is possible that we scratch the eye at that time or the pillow or bed sheet hurt the eye. I do not think it is a serious situation to panic.

It is simple problem called conjunctivitis. Apply Gentamycin eye drop 3 drops in each eye thrice a day. You will be cured after 2 nd application but complete the course that is for 2 days.

Could just be some irritant from the night that will go away. Dirt, or a bruise if you were sleeping funny. Or could be pinkeye! Just in case, be careful not to rub your eye, and especially not to rub it, and then touch the other. Wait a day or two before you worry about it; just keep hands away from that eye and use drops if it is hurting.

Could b e conjunctivitis or burst blood vessels in the eye if you are hypertensive.
