Not realy it can be level or Lower.The smoke pipe pitching up away from the stove is best(heat rises).

Heat rises. No piping should be angled downwards. The flue should be above the firebox and the piping from it should go upwards until it leaves the building. When starting a wood fire, prepare your pile of wood, light a piece of paper and hold it inside the firebox to allow a draft to start and then light the wood.
