I was not popular as a child. I was more popular as a dog. I used to play hide and seek with my friends. I was always "it." They made me count to a million before I could start looking for them. By then, it was dark outside and everyone had gone home. Baseball was king when I was a child. All you needed was a bat and a ball and an open field. Gloves were optional, and you could use anything to mark the bases. Sometimes we would get together and play tackle football in the park across from the old elementary school that we went to, but was torn down years ago. However, in the spring and summer, every kid brought his glove to the park, and for a little while he could pretend he was Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays.

Well I didn't really live in a neighborhood; I lived across the street from one...but I was friends with quite a few of the kids across the street, and our favorite thing to do was go sledding in the winter. The neighborhood was full of hills which were good for ice sledding and for real snow sledding...everyone came over to my house because we lived on about ten acres and the way the property lay, we could make these huge slaloms to sled on that just lasted what seemed like forever.....I miss snow!!!

We played so many things. It's so hard to choose a favorite.
I would have to say all the sports that we played combined. It was nothing for us to play a couple hours of basketball, and then right after that play some football. It was great interacting with all the other kids. We would go to this cemetary that had a huge field and it was nothing for us to have 15 to 20 kids all playing. We would play some football and then split off into smaller groups and go relax at someones house and play video games.
Ahhh...the good ole days.

I loved my first neighborhood! There were so many kids, boys & girls of all ages and they mostly hung out at my house. I would love to play cartoon tag or Jail Break. Actually, any game where I got to run away from the boys that thought they were oh so fast, I loved!
And then you know what else was the best, my mom would come outside with cold Tang for all of us to drink and I would say I was hungry (in front of everyone, oops!) so she would have to make about 27 Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches for all of us to sit at the picnic bench to eat. My mom is a saint. She still sarcastically reminds me today of how I used to make her feed the neighborhood. TEHETEHE!

Since we didn't have a lot of things to play with our favorite pasttime would be exploring the neighbourhoods, the river, the hills and forests or go and visit a nearby town. We were between 5 and 8 and in the summer we would be on the go the entire day, away from our parents. It was bloody marvellous and developed a strong independent streak in us.
If we got home late past supper time, we just didn't get any supper....lol.
You go to bed without supper a few times you make sure you get back home on time....smile

I didn't have a big neighborhood but my favorite was playing traffic jams, that consisted of me and 4 other kids riding our bikes, I can't even say recklessly! The other was building forts in the woods. Between all of us, we must of cleared out at least 3 acres! My fort(s) were the BEST!!!

Well, I used to be Spiderman, so it wasn't so much play as community service, but I used to capture supervillains when I went outside. The annoying thing of course was that many of them didn't KNOW they were supervillains, and could break through my invisi-web with altogether too much ease. That usually meant playing a new game, called Run For Your Life, the rules of which were usually pretty straightforward. Can you guess how it was played?

There were at least 30 kids within a 3 year age difference in my heighborhood. When the girls were involved, we invented this game called animals. There was one hunter and the rest of the players were the animals, It was the job of the hunter to capture the animals and put them in the zoo. ( a fenced back yard) A cross between tag and hide and go seek.

Jump rope. I was a double dutch queen. I knew dozens of chants and jump rope songs.
And stickball, back before all the kids had cable TV and video games. We used to play it in this empty lot behind a Chinese restaurant at the end of my street, with a wiffle ball and a big old stick.

My favorite things were hide and seek, chasing or being chased. Just plain running for the sake of running was always good! When I was seven, I remember a bunch of kids and I were running and running and running. I don't remember the reason we were running, but I remember feeling invincible, like I could go on forever, maybe even fly. It was a powerful wonderful feeling.
