Well, you could aways go for rats. I had some back before I lived in an apartment that doesn't allow anything but fish. The public image of rats is vastly different from those that are bred as pets. I would suggest females. They are clever, curious, and smart. You can train them to do tricks. Males are fine, too, but they spend most of the day sleeping. Females will wait at the cage door for you to come home and play with them. For their sake, though, get more than one. They are very social and get lonely easily. Two or three was fine for us. They are much nicer than hamsters (The only time I was ever bitten was when one of them was injured and out of her mind in pain. Can you say that for hamsters?). They are easy to care for. The only down side is that they have a fairly short lifespan. We got ours from a pet shop and they lived about three years, although if you get some from a breeder, they will live longer.

California has a listing for invasive or objectionable animals. Ferrets, Gerbils and many other pet type animals are on their list. You might find the information you are looking for here:

If it is on the list, you can't have it in California.
