It is not possible to get by with no sleep at all - you would become disoriented and confused and would eventually pass out. Sleep deprivation has been used as an effective torture for a long time. As far as needing less sleep goes, everybody's sleep requirement is different - Margaret Thatcher apparently could function well on only five hours a night. Whatever your personal requirement is, you could probably condition yourself with time to perhaps a couple of hours less, but if you want to be alert and effective, you really need to sleep properly.

I studied sleep at college in 2002 for my psych alevels and since EVERY species that has a brain engages in this behaviour, it was said that it is indeed essential. It is also when u actually integrate stuff that u hear about during the day, as ppl deprived of REM or "dream sleep" not only needed more when allowed to have it again, but suffered memory loss during the experiment. No research has been done to see if you can condition urself but I wouldnt recommend it as its not like sports training where ur body knows what to do in order to improve as part of normal processes.

Less sleep is probably possible, no sleep would be impossible- the body and mind need it to function and stay well. Sounds like a very bad idea. Having insomnia is a nightmare..don't know why you'd want to do that to yourself on purpose.

From Wikipedia:
"A 1999 study by the University of Chicago Medical Center shows that sleep deprivation severely affects the human body's ability to metabolize glucose, which can lead to early-stage Diabetes."

I don't know about you but I'm not going to risk that.

I agree, to three volume yet I even have faith you could situation your self to do something. i've got had associates who joined the army and different militia branches announcing how they lived off 4hrs or much less for the period of common training. having suggested that, while they get out of the militia they sometimes do no longer save the comparable existence-form. You physique is think to be fantastically adaptable, so it form of feels to evolve the situations you place it under. i'm form of resentful of those that could function off of four-5hrs sleep. i've got frequently happening a pair people who can try this yet i think of they're an anomaly. varied the U.S. inhabitants gets that quantity of sleep, yet i think of in case you need to drink espresso midday to stay wakeful then they are going against what our physique is telling them.
